Before your “wild hog” drives his new motorcycle make sure he takes Idaho’s STAR Training – it could save his life!  Motorcycle riding has become more popular in recent years, appealing to a new group of enthusiasts consisting of older and more affluent riders.  Sadly, there has also been a dramatic jump in the number of deaths among motorcyclists age 40 and older. Older motorcyclists account for half of all motorcyclist fatalities. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data show 51 percent of motorcyclists killed in crashes were age 40 or over, compared with just 33 percent 10 years earlier (2008 data).  

Idaho’s STAR motorcycle training program is saving lives.  A review of all 4,282 motorcycle crashes in Idaho from 1996 through 2006 revealed that 87% of those involved had not attended an Idaho STAR training class. Further research of this data indicated that STAR training is associated with a 71% reduced crash risk. There was also an 81% reduction in the risk of a fatal crash. In addition, it is estimated that if the 185 "untrained" fatalities had received STAR training, 159 would not have died. Training works!

ABOUT STAR:
STAR stands for Skills Training Advantage for Riders, because there are real advantages in being properly trained and prepared to ride. STAR provides training for all levels of riders, taught by Idaho certified Instructors. Whether you have ridden thousands of miles, or have never even sat on a motorcycle, Idaho STAR has a course to fit your needs. STAR courses take place in a controlled, off-street environment and are designed to help you develop the physical skills as well as the mental strategies needed to successfully navigate today’s roadways.  There are 5 STAR Courses offered - Basic I, Basic II, Experienced, Precision Riding Clinic, and Sidecar/Trike. 

STAR TRAINING LOCATIONS:
There are 10 training locations in the state of Idaho including one in Lewiston. Passing a required STAR course will waive the skills test required for your Motorcycle endorsement to your driver’s license.

The Idaho STAR Motorcycle Safety Program was created in 1994 and began rider training in 1995. STAR is an Idaho Division of Professional-Technical Education program and is accredited by the National Association of State Motorcycle Safety Administrators (SMSA).
